Traveling with Your Pet: Essential Documents for European Trips from or to Malta

Are you planning to travel with your furry friend between European countries from Malta or to Malta itself? It's crucial to ensure you have all the necessary documents to facilitate a smooth and hassle-free journey for your beloved pet. Here's a step-by-step guide outlining the essential documents required:

1. Microchip Identification.

2. Up-to-Date Rabies Vaccine: Administer the rabies vaccine at 3 months of age for dogs and cats, if your pet rabies is not up to date, vaccine need to be given at least 21 days before travel.

Note: If your pet's rabies vaccine is expired, it is considered as if your pet has never received the vaccine, and the 21-day waiting period before traveling still applies.

3. EU Pet Passport: Your veterinarian can provide you with an EU Pet Passport, serving as an official travel document within Europe.

4. Mandatory Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only): Certain European countries, including Malta, require a tapeworm treatment administered before arriving within 5 days to 24 hours before travel. Ensure this is recorded in the pet passport, along with a general check-up done by your vet.

5. Additional Vaccinations: Check if any extra vaccinations are needed for your destination country and ensure your pet is up-to-date.

Research the regulations of your destination well in advance to ensure a stress-free journey for both you and your pet.
